What’s in Diablo 3? Check out Diablo 2 Again.

With the release of Diablo 3 approaching and hordes of fans chomping at the bit for a peak, looking back at the esteemed Diablo 2 might give gamers a peak at what to expect from the upcoming sequel. Any gamer with a PC from 1999 to 2005 played Diablo 2 and loved it. Those same fans, now with children and other responsibilities, are willing to put their lives on hold for Diablo 3.

The most unique feature of Diablo 2, and what will be expanded into Diablo 3, is the unique customization of a character. It went beyond simply picking a character class and naming them. In Diablo 2, players could choose from a variety of equipment, some magical, some ordinary. In their adventures, they can pick up items to customize that equipment. Gems, skulls, and Rune stones all have magical properties and when combined in unique ways, give armor and weapons magical properties. Poison enemies, slow them down by freezing, send chain lightning barreling at them, or simply set them on fire. Your choice.

The customization continues with the characters themselves. As players defeat enemies, they gain experience points. Once a player reaches a level, those experience points allow them to increase strength, dexterity, vitality and energy, all of which correspond to playing ability. Players also receive skill points, which allow them to build on one of dozens of skills. This allows even more customization. A player can create a sorceress and have her specialize in fire spells or lightning spells, in attacks or protection. With all these options, it was literally possible to create thousands of different characters.

The expansion pack Lord of Destruction offered players more classes, more upgrades and another level, and sold out on store shelves everywhere. But eventually players burned through that as well. Blizzard created Battle.net, which put players together, so they could quest, customize and enjoy the game with friends. Players even created an auction house, where weapons for Diablo 2 could be purchased for real money.

These turned Diablo 2 into a unique gaming experience, far different than the linear games of the day. Virtually unlimited possibilities and a great replay value keep Diablo 2 on the shelves today. And Diablo 3 offers the same experience.

A little advice. Find your old copy of Diablo 2 and play it. It lets gamers remember what they love about the original and know what to expect in the upcoming sequel.

Diablo 3: It’s About Time…

For years, other companies have tried duplicating Diablo II , never achieving the success of the monumental epic. Although released in 2000, stores like Walmart and Target still keep the game on its shelves, routinely selling out. Players think of the game with fondness, remembering Deckard Cain, Sanctuary and the final battle with Baal in the expansion Lord of Destruction. But for a sequel we had to wait and wait and wait…

On March 1st, the wait ends. The long-awaited sequel Diablo 3 hits the shelves and fans can expect much of the same addictive gaming. Controls are still optimized for the PC, although Blizzard is eventually producing a console version.

Game play itself is similar to Diablo II. So similar veterans will be comfortable. This time, the environment can be destroyed and enemies randomly generated, allowing endless replays. The overhead view of the original game is back with improved 3-D effects, but the graphics engine does not require Direct X 10, good news for players with budget PCs. Like World of Warcraft, this game is very forgiving for older PCs. Blizzard understand not everyone owns a gaming PC.

Unlike Diablo II, the storyline and quests change depending on which of the five classes chosen (witch doctor, barbarian, wizard, monk or demon hunter). This means a totally different experience at least 5 times, and more if there’s an expansion. For gamers that beat Diablo II five or six times already, that’s good news.

Defeated enemies now offer health orbs. Those that played Diablo II know how frustrating it was to constantly fill health from the pocketed belt. Runes are back, along with the complicated recipes when combining them, but new runes are available that add to a player’s skill level rather than modify a weapon.

Blizzard is also enhancing the auction house, where players can purchase items with gold found during the game or even real dollars. A smart move, since anyone that plays WoW knows the auction house is where the real action takes place.

Diablo 3 offering a new gaming experience without departing from the design gamers loved. Fans can’t wait to jump into the dungeons and wastelands of Sanctuary and slash through hordes of moaning zombies. Let’s just hope we don’t have to wait so long for Diablo 4

Diablo 3 Exclusive Game Reviews II

With different types of monsters on hand, it’s fortunate that the character classes in Diablo III will be just as epically powerful as you remember. The Barbarian is still a melee specialist (though not without his specialized ranged attacks). The Barbarian’s skills will be familiar to Diablo II fans–we saw the whirlwind in effect, sweeping through scores of enemies–but he’ll have some other tricks up his sleeves (that is, if he wore sleeves), including the sweep, which can blast multiple enemies around him. During the on-stage demo, the Barbarian managed to take down a stone wall on a group of zombies, pointing to more interactive environments throughout the gameplay. While environments won’t be fully destructible, you can look forward to many instances, such as this one, where you can use the environment to your advantage, with a certain amount of real physics involved in the destruction.

If the Barbarian is all about wading into the fray with both weapons blazing, the newly announced Witch Doctor is all about variety. He (or she–Diablo III will let you play as a male or female version of your chosen class but will not offer more advanced customization options) will have more straightforward attacks, like the firebomb, which drops fiery death onto the enemy, as well as more interesting attacks that seem more in keeping with the class.

The Witch Doctor will have control over disease, can summon pets, and can even control the minds of his or her enemies. We saw a few examples of these different approaches in the game demo: Locust swarm is a spell that summons a nasty horde of flying locusts that can overwhelm an opponent. Better yet, the locusts will automatically spawn to attack additional enemies in the area. We saw one pet in use too; the mongrel. This pet can attack enemies and can be buffed with other Witch Doctor spells; during the demo, the player cast locust swarm on his mongrel, giving the pet an attack bonus. We also briefly saw the horrify spell, which causes enemies to temporarily flee in terror. By far, his coolest ability was the wall of zombie, which was truly terrifying. If you’ve seen a wall of fire or ice in a game before, you probably have a pretty good idea of what this skill involves.

Diablo3-hacks.com Diablo 3 Game Reviews I

Two decades have passed since the demonic denizens wandered in a bloody full rampage to shackle humanity into unholy slavery. Yet for those who battled the Prime Evils, the memory fades slowly and the wounds of the souls still burn.

The game takes place in Sanctuary, a dark fantasy world of the Diablo series. This world was saved twenty years prior by a handful of unnamed heroes in Diablo II. Warriors who, having survived the onslaught brought by the armies of the Burning Hells, have gone mad from their ordeals. It is up to a new generation of heroes to face the forces of evil threatening the world of Sanctuary.

Pause Button in Diablo III?

A fan on the B.net EU forums asked if we might get a pause button added in Diablo III, and got short shrift in a reply.

Is there a pause function in Diablo III ? Like the one they used in Starcraft. If not then it would be nice to see it in the release. It’s needed when a phone rings or boss walks by or pet catches fire or something equally distrubing.

Don’t really see any viable reason why this function shouldn’t be in the game but if there is then I’m open for some education.

Vaneras: There is no pause function in Diablo III.

If you need to take a break from playing, the best idea is probably to go back to town.
